Medical Tourism Sparks Partnerships Between Hotels and Hospitals

About 14 million people traveled to another country to receive medical care in 2016, according to Patients Beyond Borders. These people were seeking out a wide range of treatments and procedures, including:

  • Cancer care.
  • Cosmetic surgery.
  • Health screenings.
  • Reproductive treatments.

Many more patients traveled outside their town or state to another hospital in their own country. These people all have at least one thing in common: They are determined to seek out the best possible care for their desired treatments.

Medical tourism is a rapidly growing trend. As more people book plane tickets to their next doctor’s appointment, hospitals are beginning to realize some of the obstacles facing traveling patients. One such challenge is where to stay.

Hospitals and new hotels are often developed in different areas of a city, The New York Times commented. As such, many traveling patients find accommodations to be inconveniently far away from the hospital. This pattern has given way to a trend in medical tourism: hospital-hotel partnerships.

New Hospital Hotels

One such example is NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, where the closest hotel used to be across the George Washington Bridge in New Jersey until the Edge Hotel was completed in 2015. The 54-room hotel is just down the street from the hospital.

Ari Sherizen, the operating partner of Edge Property Group, the company that developed the hotel, explained that the vast majority of visitors are related to the hospital, whether they are patients, family members, visiting physicians, medical students or pharmaceutical salespeople.

Other hospital hotels are being built right on hospital property. In Miami, a new Hilton was built on Baptist Health South Florida Hospital ground, according to Hotel News. Nearby, the Miami Cancer Institute will soon be home to the first proton therapy center in the region. Of the 184 rooms, 34 will be tailored to long-term stay patients.

The medical tourism trend will continue to grow in the coming years. Patients across the country and around the world will seek out hospitals that offer the care they need or want, but can’t find in their home town, state or country.

As more patients continue to travel for care, hospitals will need to provide access to amenities to ensure their visits are as comfortable as possible. As such, partnering with developers and hotels to bring accommodations closer to their hospitals is a smart move.

When developing a new hotel, it’s important that all plans go according to schedule, and all materials and equipment are kept safe. The best way to make sure a hotel construction site is not only organized but also protected is to have secure storage containers on site. Mobile Mini’s storage containers for construction offer a weather-resistant home for equipment, materials, construction plans and other important items crucial at a construction site.
